Counterfeit stamp paper Scam 2003 - Telgi Story Download

Telgi expanded his counterfeiting operations to a more sophisticated level with the production of counterfeit stamp paper. He enlisted 300 individuals as agents to distribute the forged documents to bulk purchasers, which included banks, insurance companies, and stock brokerage firms. The enormity of the scam was estimated to surpass ₹100 billion (US$1.3 billion). One disconcerting aspect of the scandal was the involvement of numerous police officers and government employees, including Nikhil Kothari. Surprisingly, an Assistant Police Investigator was discovered to possess a net worth exceeding ₹1 billion (US$13 million), despite earning a monthly salary of only ₹9,000 (US$110).

Multiple police officers were implicated in the case, leading to an investigation. Pradip Sawant, who served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Branch, Mumbai at the time, was initially discharged but later reinstated after being cleared of any wrongdoing. S.M. Mushrif, a former police officer renowned for his book "Who Killed Karkare," played a decisive role in this case. On 17 January 2006, Telgi and several associates were sentenced to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment. Subsequently, on 28 June 2007, Telgi received an additional 13-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for another aspect of the scandal. He was also fined ₹10 billion (US$130 million). The Income Tax Department requested the confiscation of Telgi's property to settle the fine. At the time of these events, Telgi had already spent 13 years in jail.
